2023 Altona Hockey Club Annual Report

Congratulations to Tracey Drake who has been elected as the Chair of the Hockey Victoria Board! She is also the first woman to have served as the Chair since Hockey Victoria was formed more than 20 years ago.

Tracey has been Vice Chair since 2020 and a member of the HV Board for 12 years. At Altona Tracey was a long-time State League 1 player, and Board Member for 20 years prior to stepping down in 2022. She is the current Women’s Pennant C playing coach –  and has had a big impact on that group in her recent return to playing – and the Chair of Selectors for Women’s Premier League.

Anyone who has spent any time with Tracey will be confident that she can have a big impact and bring a large amount of expertise to the role. It is one of the most pivotal positions for hockey in Victoria and Australia, and from all at the Altona Hockey Club, we wish Tracey well in the role.

The Altona Hockey Club Uniform

The new playing uniform has arrived!

The Altona Hockey Club playing uniform – modelled here by Premier League captains Bronte Kerley & Andrew Scanlon – is designed to be a modern, inclusive uniform for the whole club. The traditional Royal Blue and Gold of the AHC are prominent in the design, with additional features touching on our heritage.

The uniform features the same design across all Men’s & Women’s pieces, meaning that it can be worn interchangeably at the preference of the player.

Thank you all for your patience, it is now available for everyone who pre-ordered, the uniform shop will be open Thursday from 5.30pm – 8pm. Following the Women’s Premier League shirt presentation last week, the Men’s Premier League squad will be holding a shirt presentation on Thursday evening.

Our Premier League sides will be in the new uniform from this weekend, featuring our Premier Partner Werribee Steel, while the rest of the club has the option to wear either kit until the 2025 season.

Thank you to everyone who helped celebrate our Inaugural Indigenous Round this past weekend.
Thank you to Mark Brown from the Bunurong Land Council for the powerful Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony, Aunty Maggie and Manny from the local Balit Gulyna group, and some of our own club members with Indigenous heritage, Barry Briggs, Shaz Briggs and Naish McDonald, who shared in the Yarning Circle, painted artwork and also led Acknowledgement of Country and Medal Presentations.

Our Premier League Squads all wore the Indigenous playing tops, with Hawthorn HC joining in an acknowledgement of country before each game, and medal ceremony post-game.

On the pitch, our Premier League men overcame a half-time deficit to win 5-1 thanks to four goals from Cooper Burns and one from Connar Otterbach, while Hawthorn HC were too good in WPL, running away in the last quarter to take the game 0-7.

Thank you to the generous donations of members, and the support of Hobsons Bay City Council, as well as the contribution of the Social & Inclusion committee and all of the playing groups for making the day possible.

We hope you enjoyed the day, and the start of our journey as a club to celebrating and recognising the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The Altona Hockey Club Board Supports the Voice to Parliament

July 6, 2023

The Altona Hockey Club Board supports the recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the Australian Constitution through a Voice to Parliament.

Many Altona Hockey Club members have been undertaking work to recognise and celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, history and culture, in the lead-up to Indigenous Round. The decision to support the Voice has come from this work, combined with our Club values to serve the community and provide an inclusive club for all people.

The Club wants to be clear, we are not instructing anyone on how to vote but rather state that as a Board, we believe supporting a First Nations Voice to Parliament is the right thing to do. We believe the upcoming referendum is an important moment in Australia’s history and encourage everyone to seek out the information they need to form their own views.

2022 Annual Report & Summary of the Year

2022 Annual Report & Summary of the Year

2022 Annual Report & Summary of the Year

30 December, 2022

From the Altona HC President, Alex Tyrrell:

This year has been an historically important year for the hockey club in many ways, returning for our first full season after two abandoned seasons in a row – the first time in over 70 years – and also celebrating our 90th Anniversary as a hockey club. Founded in 1932 as the Altona Baptist Hockey Club and entering a single men’s team, it was great during the season to reflect on how far we have come to be the large, diverse and successful family club that we are today. One of the standouts of the year was the 90th anniversary function which featured two panels of members regaling the audience with stories going back through the decades all the way to the 1940’s thanks to Life Member Frank Ranger (also celebrating his 90th year).

As you will see echoed many times through this Annual Report – it was great to be back on the pitch for a full season in 2022. The focus really shifted back to the pitch and our members playing hockey, improving, having fun and competing. We returned to almost identical numbers to 2021 thanks to the great work of the Board and Volunteers, particularly Tiff Bartlett leading the junior section of the club, and all of the coaches involved in creating a positive environment.

There were many highlights of the year which will be outlined in this document, some of my personal highlights:

  • Two Altona juniors, Cooper Burns & Connar Otterbach representing Australia together in the U21 Burras at the Sultan of Johor Cup.
  • Cooper taking out the Fin McNab Award to be Altona’s first Premier League Best and Fairest winner since Justine Cooke in 2006, and first male winner since Darren Duff in 1994.
  • The finals campaign including our first ever Premier League home final in front of a huge crowd, with the men making a run to the Prelim, the Women’s Metro winning the Premiership and our Men’s Metro & Pennant teams all featuring.
  • Pride Cup being one of the biggest days on the calendar with a big crowd, members from across the club asking to be involved and the incredible atmosphere created by both our members & the clubs we played against.
  • The Senior Men & Women both winning the Indoor Victorian Club Championships on the same night at the brand new facility at Parkville.
  • The Facility Development progress, meeting and engaging with local Parliament Members Tim Watts & Jill Hennessy, the Mayor of Hobsons Bay Peter Hemphill, our local Councillors Daria Kellander and Tony Briffa, as well as local council officers. The development is progressing well and an extremely important project for the club.
  • At both ends of the age spectrum – huge Hookin2Hockey numbers for the 8-week program at the start of the year led by Andrew Scanlon, and then at the end of the year, the launch of a 10-week Walking Hockey program for the 50+ age group, led by Prue Phillips and supported by a Hobsons Bay City Council Grant.

As a Board, one of our biggest goals for this year was to return to some sort of normality for hockey, and this also meant with our full offering of teams and services on the pitch. With the inertia of regular hockey broken, it was a large administrative effort to get this in place and to have a successful year. We spent a lot of time at the start of the year ensuring that we had all roles and tasks at the club clearly laid out with both an accountable and a responsible party. This was a worthwhile exercise, and also helped to highlight some large risks and gaps in our volunteer force that we are working to fill. So if you are reading this and considering helping out – please reach out to myself or any board member, as a volunteer run organisation we rely on the help and support of our community.

The other main element that work highlighted is that we have over 80 people who regularly volunteer their time week in, week out to run the club. I want to take this opportunity to thank all of those people, in particular the Board for their work over the year in returning to hockey. And thank you to the wider AHC community in their efforts this year on and off the pitch in making the club what it is.

Go A’s.

Alex Tyrrell, President, Altona Hockey Club.

Pride for all on show at hockey event

5th of August, 2022

Thank you to everyone who came out on the weekend for the Altona Hockey Club Pride Cup!

It was a great event, with junior inclusion workshops during the week, all of our junior teams wearing the rainbow socks, and our Premier League teams taking on Footscray HC at home on Saturday in front of a great crowd.

The Pride Cup is about sport culture making LGBTI+ people feel safe, and the Altona, and the hockey community have well and truly embraced the round and the inclusive ideals.

Pride for all on show at hockey event

By Matthew Sims

All colours of the rainbow shone bright under a sunny day as part of Altona Hockey Club’s Pride Cup, which was held on Saturday, July 30 after a two-year delay.

Pride Cup is challenging homophobia and transphobia within sporting clubs by making them more welcoming for LGBTQIA+ fans, players and officials.

Club president Alex Tyrrell said the club had secured a grant from Hobsons Bay council to host the Pride Cup event in 2020 following its inaugural Pride Cup event in 2019.

However, he said that both of the 2020 and 2021 in-person events were cancelled.

“In 2021, we were able to hold online education sessions for our club members and community with online sessions with Kara Montoneri from the Pride Cup organisation and former Bulldogs player Lin Jong talking about mental health,” Mr Tyrrell said.

“So for this year, we were absolutely rapt to be able to hold it.”

In the lead up to the event, the club hosted inclusion sessions for its junior players as part of the Pride Cup: Empathy Series workshops.

The event’s games included a two-all draw between Altona Hockey Club and Footscray Hockey Club in the men’s Premier League match.

In the women’s Premier League game, Footscray scored two goals to Altona’s nil.

The umpires awarded Footscray’s Georgia Hopkins and Altona’s Lauren Winship with the Pride Round medals for best on-field.

Mr Tyrrell said the event was a success for all parties involved.

“It was our biggest crowd of the year, also being the Western Derby against Footscray, who also really supported the cause,” he said.

“We only made 50 T-shirts, but they all sold out on the day to members who were keen to show their support in the rainbow tee, and the playing groups and coaches all absolutely got behind it and love wearing the rainbow kits.”
