Altona drew with top of the ladder Greensborough in a hard fought contest at Plenty Park on Saturday.

Greensborough dominated early, creating multiple scoring opportunities. Goal keeper Tom Pinnegar was solid, saving several shots, before one got through, giving Greensborough an early 1-0 lead. Despite the deficit, Altona’s defence was solid, with Jake Macvean and Mathew Higgins brilliant at full back, and centre halves Harry Dolenc and Steve Campbell. The 1-0 lead was held into half time. It could’ve been all tied up, with an easy opportunity by Tyson Priddle missed to the right of the goals, after he rushed a shot he had more time to complete.

The second half saw an improved Altona troubling the Greensborough defence. Striker Pat Philips was combining well with midfielder Josh Horton and skipper Campbell. Priddle was also good up front. Victorian representative, Andrew Scanlon, scored the equaliser, and Altona managed to hold on, for a well deserved draw.

Young midfielder Josh Horton was brilliant through out the day, and was awarded the Mick McLean Medal for the best player on the ground.

Coach Ben Guy was pleased with the result “They are a great side, who have only lost two games this year. While we didn’t get a win, we came out with a point and had some real positives against the benchmark side in the competition.”

Altona play ninth placed Essendon at Grant Reserve next Saturday.
