Altona’s Womens State League One side were gallant in a 2-1 loss181143_491037480921785_597801536_n to second placed Mentone. Coming off an 11-0 win, stopping Mentone’s goal scoring powers was the obvious focus of Coach Marc Richardson. The Altona defence was brilliant early, led by young goal keeper Taylah Brennan, withstanding an immense amount of pressure from the Mentone attack. Despite conceding a goal, they prevented the flood gates from opening, and managed to hold that margin through to half time.

An early Mentone goal in the second half seemed to spark the A’s, with Altona’s attack becoming more potent, and if it wasn’t for a brilliant performance from the Mentone goal keeper, the result may have been different.  Former international, Danielle Schubach, was brilliant and instrumental in setting up Phoebe Rothfield for Altona’s only goal. She worked brilliantly with Tegan Purser, Kate Gillis and Bronte Kerley, but unfortunately the A’s midfield work didn’t result in the strikers converting their chances.

Coach Marc Richardson said after the match “losing is always disappointing, but they are obviously in really good nick scoring 11 last week, so our defence’s performance was extremely encouraging, particularly in the first 15 minutes when they threw everything at us.”

Altona play Waverley away next Saturday.
