To all the members of the Altona Hockey Club,

2013 is going to be a huge year for the A boys! Pre-season has been going well with the perfect mixture of youth and experience bringing a new level of play to our squad. I have loved pulling on the blue and gold since my first game at the Snakepit in Pennant B as a kid from the country and will always be a proud Seagull. Your support over the years through the highs and lows of our squad has not gone unnoticed. We as a group, and I personally, cannot thank you enough. I look forward to seeing you all draped in blue and gold at the Snakepit in 2013!

As many of you know, I occasionally pull on a different color shirt and sing a little “Oh Canada” before doing battle on the international stage. I am extremely proud to represent Canada and be a part of a fantastic group of amateur athletes striving to get to the Rio Olympics in 2016.

Our program’s success is only possible because of the huge amount of support we receive from friends and family. An initiative to help raise much needed funds has been launched by Field Hockey Canada (I know it is normal hockey but in Canada Ice Hockey still reigns supreme). The initiative is called CHIMP (CHaritable IMpact) and it as a fantastic way to support and follow our team’s and my progress as we push forward to Rio.

In order to be a part of this you have to join my giving group at chimp.net/groups/matthew-guest-road-to-rio-2016. Through this, I will be providing regular updates and also raising funds for our program and for other charities doing great work for those less fortunate. All of the funds I raise will be divided 50/50 between our program and my chosen charities. The charities I have decided to support are Doctors Without Borders which provides medical care to areas without medical infrastructure and areas in need of emergency medical aide. The other charity is Right To Play International who use sport and play to educate and empower children and youth to overcome the effects of poverty, conflict, and disease in disadvantaged communities.

The Altona Hockey Club has given me so much since I joined back in 2000, and still gives me more than I could ever repay. I have learnt a lot playing with Altona, the Vikings and Canada, and want to impart a little bit of this on some of our young seagulls. As the season draws nearer I will be teaming up with a few of the State League guys to run clinics for our juniors, stay tuned for more information.

You can follow me on twitter @guesty2626 and If you have any questions at all for me please contact me at [email protected].

A final note CHIMP is a Canadian website and is not currently configured for international donations. You can still donate though – please click here to view some very brief guidelines on how to make a financial contribution from outside Canada.

I look forward to seeing you all throughout the year!

Go A’s

Thanks,

Guesty
