Altona’s Premier League girls were coming off a strong win against Footscray when they faced MCC on a cold and wet Tuesday night at the SNHC.

MCC were coming off a surprising loss to TEM during their weekend game and had a day less to recover for their mid-week match against an up-and-about A’s outfit.

The match began at a quick pace with MCC knocking it around our players, trapping passes and creating opportunities for themselves. The A girls were on the back foot and struggling to take control of the game when MCC made the most of an opportunity making the score 1-0 in their favour.

The A girls did not crawl into their shell and started to move the ball better composing themselves down back and up front. Some great work from captain Danielle Schubach and veteran striker Steph Young led to a chance for Jess Brennan to convert making the score an even tie after the half-time break.

The game was being played like Tennis with constant turnovers from one end to the other but the defence was relentless and stopped any MCC attack that came their way.

A great turnover from Bronte Kerley late in the game found an in-form Schubach who took the ball from the half-way line, getting rid of two MCC players along the way before taking on the goalkeeper and slotting her fifth goal of the season.

A hard-fought 2-1 win got Altona the three points with a well deserved long weekend on the cards.

Altona take on TEM in Round 9 of the Premier League season, hoping to continue their winning streak.
