Steve Campbell plays his 200th Premier League game

4th August 2017

This weekend club legend Steve Campbell is playing his 200th SL1/Premier League game for the Altona Hockey Club.

Known for his fearless and uncompromising play on the field, Steve has been a leader of the team since his debut in Round 1, 2005. On and off the pitch he displays incredible passion and commitment, and he will become just the 8th player in the history of the club to reach the milestone.

While it is often his courage and work-rate that get comments from the crowd, his hockey talent is without question, and he wasn’t always a defender, scoring 99 goals in a single season of U9’s!

Coming through the junior ranks from his first season at Altona as an U9 in 1996, playing through junior state teams to very quickly earning plaudits in the media in his third game in SL1 and first at home – also Marc Richardson’s 100th game and Ian Bartlett’s 300th. He very quickly looked at home at the top level in Victoria and displayed the skills that has led to him winning a record 6 Men’s Club Champion Awards.

Since 2008 he has also finished runner-up twice, meaning he has only finished outside of the top two once in that period, showing the extremely high level of consistency he has performed with, and the regard he is held by his teammates and coaches.

Steve’s commitment extends well beyond the field, a 3-time winner of the best clubman U21 award (also a record), he is an incredible asset to the club and great person to be around.

We hope to see a big crowd down to the Snakepit for Fair Go, Sport! Round and to see the men take on Southern United at 2pm on Saturday for Stevie’s 200th game!
