2024 Australian Development Squad and 2023 Junior World Cup

January 12th, 2024

A huge congratulations to both Cooper Burns and Connar Otterbach who have been selected in the Hockey Australia National Men’s Development Squad for 2024!

The squad consists of 19 players, who are considered the best talent in the country outside of the Kookaburras squad. In the announcement of the Kookaburras squad for 2024, Colin Batch has stated that if required he will select from the Development Squad for the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Connar retains his spot in the squad from 2023 with his strong performance for HC Melbourne, while Cooper has been named in the squad for the first time, following on from his performance at the Junior World Cup and with HC Melbourne.

It is not only a great achievement, but a huge opportunity for both players to train with the best in the country and some of the best players in the world at various stages during an Olympic year and continue to improve their hockey.

Nye Roberts & Cooper Burns at the 2023 Junior World Cup

January 12th, 2024

Well done to Nye Roberts and Cooper Burns who have helped the Australian U21 Burras to a 6th place finish at the Junior World Cup.

They finished the tournament with a narrow 2-1 lose to the Dutch to finish in 6th place, and while they would have loved to finish higher up the rankings, it was an incredible tournament – they narrowly lost the quarter final to eventual finalists the French, and playing the Dutch in the 5 v 6 playoff points to the strength of the tournament. The Australians had a travelling entourage in Malaysia and it was great to see some faces familiar to the AHC in the crowd.

Pictured: Nye and Cooper on the ball, and the 4 Victorians in the Australian team – Liam Henderson, Craig Marais, Cooper Burns and Nye Roberts.

Both players had extremely strong tournaments, if you missed any of the games, they are worth catching up to see the boys performances and some great hockey on: https://watch.hockey/

Premier League Coaching in 2024

December 12th, 2023

The Altona Hockey Club board is delighted to announce that our 2024 Women’s Premier League Coach will be Danielle Schubach, assisted by Stephanie Young, and our 2024 Men’s Premier League Coach is Greg Drake.

2023 Altona Hockey Club Annual Report

It is fantastic to have Greg returning to Premier League coaching, Many of you will already know Greg well, but for those who do not, a sample of his CV below speaks for itself, and we can’t wait to see what he can achieve with the Men’s Squad.

Greg played 250 State League 1 (PL) games for Altona, playing a key role in our two Premierships and was a Victorian senior side squad member. He has coached our MPL side before, over 10 years ago, and more recently the WPL side. In the time since last coaching MPL, he has coached the Victorian U21s, has won the Australian Hockey League (the predecessor to Hockey One) as a coach of the Victorian Vipers, before moving to coach International hockey as assistant for the Canadian Women, Japan Women, and USA women before also taking over as head coach for Pro-League of the USA Women – and of course taking out the 2023 Women’s Pennant D Premiership as coach.

He will also continue in his role of AHC Club Coach Developer, helping to develop and support our club coaches.

Greg will be supported by Ian Bartlett who is stepping into the Reserves coaching role. Ian is the Premier League games record holder at Altona with 336 games and will bring a wealth of hockey knowledge to the squad.

2023 Altona Hockey Club Annual Report

Danielle and Steph had a great first year coaching the women, finishing the season just outside of finals in 9th place, a marked improvement on the 2022 season result in a highly competitive year. The feedback from the players was overwhelmingly positive and spoke volumes to the work and expertise that Danni and Steph bring to the squad.

2023 Annual Report & Summary of the Year

2023 Annual Report & Summary of the Year

2023 Annual Report & Summary of the Year

November 14th, 2023

The Altona Hockey Club is proud to present the 2022-2023 Annual Report:

2023 Altona Hockey Club Annual Report

President’s Year in Review

2023 is our 91st anniversary as a club, and last year I wrote of an historic year with our 90th anniversary and return to the pitch post-Covid. I didn’t expect 2023 to be quite so significant but reflecting on the year there have been a number of historic achievements;

  • We have introduced a new uniform for the first time in 12 years. It looks great – and apart from a new look, it also really walks the walk with our inclusivity goals, meaning the whole club will be wearing a uniform that looks the same for the first time, and allowing players the freedom to choose which items they want to wear.  This was led by Kerrie Myyrylainen and Andrew Scanlon
  • We have been included in the Hobsons Bay Council Budget for the redevelopment of our facility, which will be the most major works to the pavilion since the extension was added in 1977, 46 years ago. This project is being led by Andrew Meiers and David Burns.
  • We celebrated our Inaugural Indigenous Round, and I’m positive work that every member who attended one of the events or interacted with the educational messages, will have learnt something and be richer for the experience. This was led by Bronte Kerley, Naish McDonald and the social & inclusion committee.
  • After a long and great partnership with Burbank of 12 years, we welcomed Werribee Steel as our Premier Partner, our first major sponsor change since 2011, and it’s great to have Werribee Steel’s support.
  • The amount of Australian representation we have had this year is unprecedented, from the Mens & Womens Development Squad, to the U21 Burras, Indoor, Masters & Hockey 5’s, it is a fantastic achievement for both the individuals and the club.
  • On the pitch, the Premier League competition went through an unprecedented relegation of four teams. Which resulted in heightened stakes and tension in many areas of hockey this year, both on and off the pitch. Including the re-introduction of the League Entry Criteria, which we successfully met this year.
  • We returned to having a boys and girls team in every junior age group from Under 10’s to Under 16’s with the addition of the U14 Girls team this year.

So while it was maybe not quite as historic as our 90th year, the pace of change continued and we were able to achieve some great things as a club this year.

That is all in addition to the on-field exploits, which included our junior section continuing to grow and a nail biting Grand Final for the U16 Girls,  two Senior Premierships – the Monday Night Open team led for many years by Justin Burgess, and the Women’s Pennant D team take out a thriller of a Grand Final and secure promotion – and many other memorable moments across the age groups and grades.

As a Board this year, we were entering the third year of our Strategic Plan, we had a focus this year on increasing our volunteer base and the sustainability of running our club, in addition to delivering key projects – many listed above in the achievements. It was certainly not without challenges, and both Kieran Symons (I would like to thank Kieran for his efforts as Treasurer and also Josh Coote, a huge effort in stepping in as interim Treasurer for the end of financial year) and Pete Wroblewski stepped down during the year – and each year the demands on community sporting clubs is growing, with key volunteers shouldering large burdens. This is a critical area that we will need to continue to address as we move forward and grow as club.

Personally, I am stepping down as the President after four years in the role, two as Vice-President and 10 years on the Board. On reflection it has been very rewarding and I am happy to leave the club in a strong place, and proud of what we have been able to achieve. Leading through a rather tumultuous period of Covid was challenging, as have the past two seasons post-Covid been equally as challenging. I encourage all club members, particularly leaders, to consider how you can help the AHC – as they say, many hands make light work – but it is all roles that need leadership to really continue to take our club to the heights that it can reach.

Thank you to everyone who has volunteered their time to help during my tenure – there are many tireless hours spent by many volunteers at the club, from the Board, through to all levels – and the club would not function without this commitment from many people, which often goes unrecognised. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for the A’s.

Alex Tyrrell, President, Altona Hockey Club

EyeCare Plus Altona – your local Optometrist and our new Gold Sponsor

November 8th, 2023

We are excited to welcome Eyecare Plus Altona as a Gold Sponsor of the Altona Hockey Club.

The Altona Hockey Club Uniform

Welcome to Eyecare Plus Altona! We have been providing eyecare in the Altona area and its surrounds since 1988 and hope to see you and your family soon. We have won past Canstar Optometry awards based on the delivery of our service and complete eye care and would love to show you how we are different.

We conduct all eye health and tests and prescribe eyewear and contact lenses but what makes us unique is that our Optometrists Susan Martinez and Liz Muller have combined many years of extensive experience with Vision Therapy. These skills and qualifications help immensely with the special requirements of children’s vision, sports vision (important for Hockey!!) and Vision Therapy treatments for children and adults. They also help to provide insight into more difficult eye conditions.

You can visit our general optometry website www.eyecareplus.com.au or our Vision Therapy website www.visionadvantage.com.au to find out more and also read up on our treatments for reducing myopia ( shortsightedness) in children and young adults.

You will find our practice to be a comfortable and relaxed environment, and easy to access with ample free parking directly in front and behind the practice.

We are interested in looking after your eyecare over the long term, so come in at any time or book online for an eye examination. Sit down with our Altona optometrists in store and have a thorough consultation in under 45 minutes for a complete eye examination and discussion about your eye health. And have a chat with Erin, our manager, who has been an avid Altona Hockey club member.

See you soon!
