2011 SL1 Best and Fairests

Congratulations to Danielle Schubach the winner of the 2011 women's SL1 best and fairest, and congratulations to Steve Campbell and Ben Oborne on becoming joint winners of the SL1 men's best and fairest.
It was a great effort by Danielle and Steve who played only 13 and 12 games respectively, and it's great to see players who have come through Altona's junior system continuing their success at SL1 level.
Ben Oborne is in his first year at the club and his first year back at hockey after a 5 year hiatus. Ben has kept for SL1 all year and the award is testament to the work he has put in and recognition for the year he has had.
Homophobia in Sport
This video is a must view for all members. It is extremely inspiring and thought-provoking. Altona Hockey Club and Hockey Victoria aim to be inclusive for all members and this video is a raw and potentially eye-opening story from former Essendon and Victoria Goalkeeper Gus Johnston. Many of us have played against Gus or watched him play, it is great to see this insight into his life.

In their first game against Trinidad and Tobago Matthew Guest has hit a hat-trick! His first for Canada. Details here, photos here and Matthews profile here.
The games in Guadalajara are Canada's first chance to qualify for London 2012 and a huge achievement for Matthew after missing the recent "Cangaroo" series against Australia A through injury - Canada are also defending champions.
Cyril Turner Award
Congratulations to Tracey Drake and David Burns, joint winners of the 2011 Cyril Turner Award. It is the most prestigious of the AHC's non-playing awards and is in recognition of outstanding and selfless contribution to the club in the manner of Cyril himself.
Tracey and David have contributed greatly to the AHC over a number of years and in a number of different capacities, this award is great recognition for their efforts.
Australian Veterans
Ian 'Bones' Bartlett has been selected in the 40 and over veterans Australian team after the recent veterans tournament in Canberra. The teams will travel to England in 2012.

U17 Western Metro Wildcats
The U17 girls Wildcats team has won yet again. Altona had an extremely strong representation in the team and it was great to see the girls do so well.
The U17 boys finished a disappointing 5th despite only losing one game, to the eventual champions. However, once again all Altona players played extremely well and represented the club with pride.
2011 SL1 All-Stars
